Ultra Wide Band Radar Techniques

AEL is involved in the assessment and design of ultra wide band Radar systems. Such systems are acterised in terms of a large fractional transmitted bandwidth.

Such very wide band radars have applications in:

AEL can efficient combine its time domain electromagnetic solvers radar system architecture design to provide proof of principle and feasibility studies for new sensors. Shown below is the result of a system design for an ultra wide band interferometer. In the top image is the array pattern for a conventional narrow band radar. We can see the multiple peaks or grating lobes which make the interferometer highly ambiguous to position. In the lower image is shown the results for a new type of wide band interferometer. The pattern shown has one main beam with sidelobes due to antenna imperfections. These results were obtained by using the AEL time domain finite difference Maxwell solver coupled to a novel radar system design.
