Blast Studies

Fluid Gravity have developed several hydrocodes aimed at addressing some of the issues related to blast inside structures. This requires the ability to model high speed flows, shocks and reacive flow. We illustrate some of these with movies from relevant work.

As an example of the expediency of using the hydrocodes, a study of the collapse of a building as a result of a charge detonating inside it identified the crucial importance of assessing the amount of secondary combustion occurring within a closed volume. Estimates of the charge required to demolish the building using published blast loading data for explosives were severely in error. These predicted that the charge mass required to cause major damage was of order 4 times larger than the actual amount. A containment design based on that data would fail dramatically in practice.

Another vital aspect of modelling blast is accurate reactive flow computations. We illustrate this here with examples on Gaseous Detonations, Shock Flame interactions etc.
