Hydrocodes » Shock/Flame Interactions

In a wide range of scenarios shocks and flames interact. A classic range of experiment were carried out by Markstein where a plane shock interacted with a spherical flame front (as a result of a central spark initiation) . The asymmetric collapse of the flame bubble generates vorticity which accelerates the flame and can sometimes lead to the transition to detonation.

We have made use of our codes to study the details of such interactions and an example of a shock interacting with a spherical bubble in a closed tube is given in the movie.
