Hydrocodes » Material Models
Accurate material models and equations of state are needed for inclusion in advanced hydrocodes. We actively collate and develop material models and equations of state, both from first principles and from the literature. A complex area where material data is extremely important is the transition to detonation of explosives as a result of shock interactions. The results are sensitive to the impactor equation of state and the detailed kinetic model for the explosive chemistry. The example below shows the onset of a detonation wave after the material has been processed by two shock waves. As an impactor strikes PBX explosive, shocks are initiated which drive energetic reactions. The animation shows the development of the various shocks and features as the reactive flow progresses.
